A man who sang sectarian songs in a police car after they offered him a lift home has been told '˜next time sing '˜Will Griggs is on fire' and he might not get into as much trouble'.

District Judge Barney McElholm made the suggestion as he fined Darren Samuel Holmes £300.

Holmes, of Templetown Park, Maydown, pleaded guilty to assaulting and resisting police on April 10.

The court heard that police were called to Foyle Street because a drunk male was acting ‘erratically’ and trying to get into parked cars.

Police offered to give him a lift home for his own safety.

During the journey the 43-year-old’s ‘demeanour changed’ and he began to sing sectarian songs loudly.

The officers asked him to moderate his behaviour and he told them to ‘f*** off’.

He also pushed an officer on the chest.

Holmes told them to ‘f*** away off you f****** pansy’ as he was being arrested.
